10 Landscaping Companies in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Compare 10 Winston-Salem landscaping companies and learn what to check before hiring for lawn, planting, drainage or hardscape work

A Winston-Salem homeowner should compare the ten listed landscaping companies by the work they actually perform, then request a written scope, schedule and payment terms. Hiring one usually means a site visit, soil and drainage discussion, a design or maintenance plan, and a clear agreement about plants, grading, irrigation and cleanup.

A Winston-Salem homeowner should hire for the yard in front of them, not the yard in a brochure. The city sits in North Carolina's Piedmont, where humid summers, wet spells, winter freezes and red clay can turn a simple planting job into a drainage argument.

Tall fescue is common, but summer heat can stress it, while compacted clay holds water in one place and sheds it from another. Slopes may erode, shaded lawns thin out, and a pretty patio still settles if the base was rushed. Ask each landscaper how the plan handles those conditions before discussing the plant list.

Who are the best landscaping companies in Winston-Salem?

Ordered by Google rating weighted against the number of ratings, so a long record of good work outranks a handful of perfect scores. This is a ranking of public feedback, not an endorsement.

1. Nature's Select® Lawn Care

4.9 stars from 312 Google reviews.

Nature's Select Lawn Care grew from Bill Hildebolt's background in food technology and soil science, beginning in Winston-Salem in 1994. Its local program focuses on a biological lawn-care approach for the Piedmont's red clay and tall fescue, with brown patch monitoring from May through August and pre-emergent timing tied to spring green-up.

What customers say:

I was very impressed with the work Nikki and Charlie did just last week. They were very detailed and made sure of the full coverage. Charlie even rang a bell to let me know when he noticed one of our wooden lights pole not very secured into the ground. Very friendly people. Thanks for the great service.

I’ve been a satisfied customer of Nature’s Select for over 10 years. They have totally renewed my lawn. I appreciate the work of Tyler and Trey for keeping it green, healthy, and weed free!

The team from Superior Lawn and Landscaping, Inc. did a great job on my property. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The property was medium sized within the city limits. Multiple neighbors around me which they seamlessly worked around. They removed an old fence, so much over grown ivy, a buried koi pond, tree stumps, bricks, cinder blocks, and goodness knows what else. They showed up on time, worked hard, communicated timelines efficiently, and delivered results. The pricing was fair. Debris was cleaned up and they seeded and added hay to the broken soil after excavation. I was very pleased with the work and am looking forward to enjoying my new and improved yard. Highly recommend!

My old retaining wall was cracked and leaning, but the team replaced it quickly and professionally. The new wall is solid, looks great, and has proper drainage for long-term protection. They were efficient, tidy and easy to work with-highly recommend!

I appreciate the professionalism shown by the entire team and look forward to doing many future projects with MATEM Landscaping and Construction. Well done fellas.

Brandy Drummond (Dgirls), 5 months ago

I called Matem when I was desperately trying to get our driveway finished with a short deadline. I reached out at 5pm on a Wednesday and they were working on the very next afternoon. After speaking with Mordeki and explaining the situation I was in, he immediately stepped in and did everything in his power to try and make it come together. He and his team performed miracles and got the job done as fast as they possibly could. I was very impressed with his communication-quick and reliable! I also found him to be very ethical and honest. I knew I was going to get a result he would stand by. I highly recommend Matem, you will have a great experience working with them!

Matem Landscape and Construction is an awesome team of professionals. Mordeki and his crew was very quick and professional in assisting me with building back up my front and back yard. They were very informative from beginning to end in letting me know the next step in caring for my property. The price was very reasonable and within my budget. I will be considering them for all my future projects.

4. Flanary Brothers Landscaping

5.0 stars from 80 Google reviews.

Flanary Brothers Landscaping is a locally owned business based in King, North Carolina, serving Winston-Salem and nearby communities. Its services include landscape design and installation, concrete and brick patios, storm drainage installation and treatment plans.

What customers say:

Dustin and his team are awesome! We hired them to plant 11 Crepe Myrtles and Radican trees. They are the hardest working group we've seen in a very long time...very meticulous to do exactly what you want. Afterwards we wanted 2 of the Radicans moved a few feet back. Dustin and Dylan were there with a week and was done within a few hours. No attitudes, no complaining, just friendly, personable, knowledgeable and very respectful. We highly recommend them and plan to use them again in the future.

John Stemmer, 4 months ago

Flanary Brothers did an incredible job for us! They removed all the tired looking mulch and pine needles and replaced them with generous amounts of brick chips around our house, as well as rearranging pavers. All employees were continuously busy and took the greatest care as they completed the task they were assigned. Dustin was approachable and wanted to complete the job exactly as we requested. Well done!! I highly recommend this company!!

Sharon Holmes, 4 months ago

If there was a way to give Flanary Brothers a 10 star review, it still wouldn’t be enough to express our satisfaction at the incredible job they did to turn our new home from a copy of the cookie cutter plan in the development to something lovely and unique and totally ours! The flowering shrubs and evergreen plants along both the sides, front and back of the house are just beautiful and we’re excited to see what future seasons bring in the way of color. And they managed to find us a red Crepe Myrtle, which is so lovely. Dustin, Brad, Mike, Jeremiah and Dillon worked tirelessly over two days to transform our yard and they were extremely professional, helpful, and so much fun to be around. Please consider them for a variety of landscaping and patio jobs, as they are simply the best!

What customers say:

Lee and his team did a fantastic job with our hardscaping and landscaping. His team was cordial and professional during the project and it went without any issues. Would recommend to all friends and family.

Jake Horvat, 6 months ago

Another excellent project completed, and I couldn't be happier! As you can see in the pictures the craftsmanship is excellent, and Lee's crews work fast and efficiently. The owner is a very professional and straight up guy, which is hard to find these days. He even sent the crew back to redo a small section around a corner where the concrete pulled from each side while settling resulting in a small crack across the piece while settling. They came back in a couple weeks and did a perfect replacement piece. All around great company to work with, and highly recommend to anyone looking for high quality work done right, on time, and on budget!

This review is a little long, but I wanted to make sure I gave a detailed review. I have posted photos showing the progress of the job so you can see the beginning and then the end result. I bought a house that I liked but hated the back yard. The back yard had a terrible incline. Could not use the back yard and if I did, I would end up hurting my back, knee and ankle. I knew I needed to have the back yard flattened. I started looking for a company. Couple never called me back others came out but did not connect with them. This was going to be a big job, and I wanted to make sure I had the right company and people doing this work. After about a year of looking I found Hardscape Concepts. Emailed Lee and he got back to me the next day. Got him out to my house shortly after that. He arrived on time and listened to everything I wanted. I had a ton of questions, and he took his time and answered every question with detailed explanations. He was not in a rush and stayed until I had all my questions answered. Couple days later I had a quote, and I felt I had the right company and man for the job and boy was I right. Lee had 4 of his workers or they really should be called artists come to my house. They showed up on time every day and worked till it got dark. Temperatures were close to 95-100 and they worked thru it. Had some days where it rained a little and they worked thru it. These 4 guys worked so hard like it was their house. I was so impressed with these guys. Each day when I got home from work I watched the transformation, and it was incredible. This was not a quick job and the detail these guys put into the job every day was unbelievable. They took their time, and I was looking for things to complain about but never found anything. Each day when I walked into my back yard I was asked what I thought of the progress and did I have any questions. When I did have a question, they would stop work and listen to me and then give me a detailed explanation. I never felt like I was bothering them. At the end of the workday, they cleaned everything up and left my backyard as clean as possible. All my emails or phone calls to Lee during this job were returned very quickly. I always was able to get in touch with Lee and he always kept me updated on the job. I never felt like I had no idea what was going on. I had told Lee that when the job was finished, I expect to open my backdoor and be blown away each time I look at my backyard. I told him I wanted a work of art to admire. He accomplished that and then some. My back yard is now the place I want to be at every single day/evening. I can't say enough about Lee. If you are looking for somebody who is honest, does what he says he will do and has incredible workers then Hardscape Concepts is the company you want to hire. I can't say enough good things about this experience, Lee and his workers. This is the company that you want to hire.

6. California Landscaping & Lawn Care

4.7 stars from 93 Google reviews.

California Landscaping & Lawn Care provides landscape design and installation for homes and businesses. Its work includes garden installations and custom hardscapes, with an emphasis on developing complete outdoor spaces.

What customers say:

My family has been using California Lawn Care since we first moved into our home in 2022. Rafael and his wife do exceptional work maintaining and caring for our lawn, and their prices are always. We recently hired them for some hardscaping in the back yard and they did an amazing job bringing our vision to life! Rafael was communicative, professional, and made sure we were satisfied with the work every step of the way. I would absolutely recommend their business.

Delaney Drechsler, 2 months ago

We requested a quote from a few local companies based on positive reviews, with California L&L Care being the first to respond and give us an onsite estimate (in less than 24 hours). The other two companies called a few days later and couldn't provide a better estimate. Two days later, Rafael and his team were done with a full lawn cleanup. They were easy to schedule with, quick and professional in their work, and even helped us think through a few issues we were having in the yard. Will definitely be a repeat customer and would highly recommend based on our experience.

Dropped my service out of nowhere right before the season started. Not a warning or anything not very good customer service in my opinion and not how a business should treat their customers. Very displeased. Customer I’ll take my hard earned money elsewhere

I searched a long time for a company that was reliable and went above and beyond what one might expect. Complete Grounds management and staff do an excellent job, are incredibly polite, and go out of their way to meet a customer’s request and to satisfy the customer’s needs. I was most impressed with the timely communication and process of informing me of what to expect and the timeframe. The workers did exactly as I was told they would and checked with me before they left to make sure I was happy with the results. I’m delighted to have found this company and highly recommend them with no hesitation.

Nice guy to work with. He quoted me a price sight unseen, he however admitted that was the wrong way to do it. We adjusted the quote and I agreed to the new price. He demoed a shed and hauled it away. I would recommend him.

Anthony Corman, a month ago

Hired Mike to clean overgrown backyard. Grass and weeds several feet high. He stated he would haul away the debris. He did not. When asked during the work he said he was only going to remove big pieces. He left several inches of chopped grass on my yard and blew the rest of the cut grass into the back area I wanted cleaned. I can't see the stone terrace or ground in this areas due to the debris left. I thought the price was reasonable based on removal of debris but just for blowing the excess grass around with a blower left je feeling the job was over priced. I will now have to do raking and removal myself. He wrote up the paperwork to state only large debris removal after I asked about him raking it up. He arrived on time and had to do a lot of heavy weed eating. Had he removed the debris I would recommend his work. Just make sure you are 100% in agreement on what you are getting quoted. Update to response from owner: I expected this response based on owner responses to other reviews not 100% in his favor. I'll save myself the heated back and forth and just repeat....Make sure you know exactly what you are contracting for and make sure you get your paperwork before work begins, not halfway through the procesfireplace. Edit #3..Added pictures. For my small very overgrown backyard I did ask twice during quote if debris would be hauled away. The answer was yes. For $1250 I did not expect the excess grass to be blown into my flowerbed, fence line, and fire pit.

Mitchel Davis, 3 months ago

Imperial Landscaping have been my landscapers of choice for years now and if you’re in search of your own, definitely look their way! They’re efficient, consistent, affordable, and thoughtful. If there’s something you think you need taken care of, chances are they’ve already offered you that service. I regularly pay for lawn mowing, edging, and spraying for weeds in my garden beds but they’ve also pruned trees and refilled the mulch in my beds as well whenever it’s needed. I cannot recommend them enough!

Jacob Sams, 7 months ago

James and his crew came out to tackle what my husband and I refer to as the jungle that was our back yard. Trees, vines, bushes, etc they cleared out making our back yard look so much nicer! He and his team were friendly, on time and communicative throughout the whole process- very professional. We plan to continue to use this company to improve the look of our outdoor space. I would 100% recommend James and his team!

How do you choose a landscaper in Winston-Salem?

Start by matching the company to the job. A lawn care provider may be the right fit for fertilizing, mowing or disease monitoring, while a landscape contractor is better suited to grading, drainage, planting beds, patios or walls. A company that works with commercial properties may have a maintenance process built for larger sites, but that does not automatically make it the best fit for a small residential yard.

Ask for a written scope that names the materials, plant sizes, grading changes, drainage outlets, irrigation work, cleanup and warranty terms. In Winston-Salem's red clay, ask how soil will be amended and how compacted areas will be prepared. For hardscape work, ask about excavation depth, base material and compaction. If the answer is just “we have done this before,” keep asking. Dirt remembers.

Get at least two written proposals for any substantial project, and compare the work rather than only the total price. Confirm who pulls permits if the project needs them, how weather changes the schedule, and whether ongoing maintenance is included or separate.

Project need Questions to ask Details to compare
Lawn maintenance Are mowing, edging, feeding and seasonal treatments listed separately? Visit frequency, treatment timing and leaf cleanup
Planting beds How will red clay and drainage be handled? Soil preparation, plant sizes, mulch depth and watering plan
Drainage or grading Where will runoff go during a heavy storm? Slope changes, outlets, erosion control and permits
Patio or walkway How deep will the base be excavated and compacted? Base material, surface material, joints and settlement warranty
Commercial grounds Who handles inspections and service issues? Response process, maintenance schedule and reporting

Frequently asked questions

How much does landscaping cost in Winston-Salem?

Small maintenance visits may cost far less than a drainage, grading or patio project, so there is no useful single price for every yard. Ask for a written estimate that separates labor, materials, soil work, plantings, irrigation, permits and cleanup.

What plants grow well in Winston-Salem, North Carolina?

The best choices depend on sun, drainage and soil preparation, but many Winston-Salem yards support native trees, shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses suited to the Piedmont. Ask the landscaper to identify mature size, moisture needs, winter tolerance and deer pressure before planting.

How often should lawns be treated in Winston-Salem?

Treatment timing depends on the grass type and the season. Tall fescue generally needs attention in fall and spring, while summer heat can make overfeeding or excessive watering a mistake. A lawn plan should account for soil testing, weeds, disease pressure and irrigation.

Do I need a landscaper for drainage problems?

Hire someone with grading and drainage experience if water collects near the foundation, crosses a walkway, erodes a slope or stays in the lawn after rain. The proposal should explain where runoff will go, what elevation changes are needed and how the outlet will be protected.
