San Diego homeowners should call a local landscaping company for expert help with drought-tolerant yards, tree care, and outdoor living spaces. Hiring a professional means you get a crew that knows the climate, the soils, and the real cost of keeping a yard beautiful here, plus, they’ll handle the heavy lifting and the details you might miss.

San Diego is paradise, but your yard doesn’t always act like it. The marine layer teases you with cool mornings, then the sun bakes your clay soil by noon. Water bills climb, plants crisp up, and that patchy lawn never quite matches the postcard version in your head.

A good landscaper here knows how to work with what you’ve got. They’ll help you pick the right drought-tolerant plants, deal with poor drainage or compacted clay, and make the most of every drop of water. Whether you want a low-maintenance garden or an outdoor kitchen for Sunday carne asada, there’s a crew in San Diego who’s done it before and can walk you through the trade-offs.

Who are the best landscaping companies in San Diego?

Ordered by Google rating weighted against the number of ratings, so a long record of good work outranks a handful of perfect scores. This is a ranking of public feedback, not an endorsement.

What customers say:

I had Mueller Landscape out to investigate how my new irrigation system was set up as my plants weren't doing that well and I could not get the company who installed to check it out. Mueller was very efficient, found the issues and made the needed adjustments. I am pleased with the service I received.

Scott Rape, a month ago

I was needing help quickly. Mueller responded, and made it possible by rescheduling appointments on the spot for an employee to come to my house that day. I have never experienced such immediate and expert customer service before. I highly recommend Mueller landscaping.

Martha Lampland, a month ago

Mueller Landscape continues to do an outstanding job! The team is always professional, thorough, and leaves the yard front & back looking absolutely beautiful—it’s such a pleasure to come home and enjoy it after they’re finished. What impressed me most was their exceptional customer service. As I was heading out the door, the crew took the time to stop, say hello, and ask if there was anything specific I’d like them to focus on during the visit. That level of care and attention is rare and truly appreciated. Highly recommend Mueller Landscape!

CM Precision recently trimmed back 3 very tall olive trees which were growing over our fence into my neighbors yard and removed two smaller trees and ground their stumps. They were very professional, worked hard and got the job completed in a timely manner. They cleaned up and left our property spotless!! I have set up another appointment to be in Nov to lace and trim up our very tall Englemen Oak and 2 Live Oaks. They will be our ‘GO TO’ tree company in the future and will recommend them to neighbors and friends!! Thank you !!

Great experience. Chuck is a fantastic owner and person and has a great crew. I picked out (6) mediterranean fan palms for planting at his “nursery” location which were then transported to my home. First, they needed to stump grind two different areas in my backyard before the holes for planting could commence. They were very careful of any underground wiring, electrical and irrigation. I could not be happier with the final result, as pictured.

David Swanson, 6 months ago

Did a great job trimming my overgrown Chinese Elm. There tree looks good and is not safe for the Santa Ana season. They cleaned up my yard and the neighbor’s yards that has branches fall in them. All the employees were polite and answered any questions I had. I would recommend them.

3. INSTALL-IT-DIRECT Landscape Design & Build San Diego

4.8 stars from 245 Google reviews.

INSTALL-IT-DIRECT Landscape Design & Build San Diego uses a detailed project tracking system to keep every step on schedule. Clients work with a dedicated project manager from material orders to final walkthroughs. The company offers a money-back guarantee if any project deadline is missed due to their delay.

What customers say:

I hired Install It Direct for a large outdoor project that included pavers, drainage, and artificial turf. Unfortunately, this turned into months of stress, constant follow up, and me having to catch issue after issue that should have been caught by any competent crew or quality control process. For context, I have done a lot of remodeling in my life. I am comfortable managing big projects and I know what is normal to expect. The issue here was not the size or complexity of the job. The issue was the subcontractors they used. The attention to detail was extremely poor and it felt like corners were being cut at every opportunity. The biggest theme of this entire project was lack of attention to detail and lack of oversight. I felt like I had to be the project manager and inspector full time, because problems were only addressed when I personally noticed them and pushed for corrections. Here are some of the issues I dealt with: Drainage and pavers A lot of polymeric sand went down two drains because the drains were not covered or taped during sand application. Drains were installed inconsistently and not aligned. Some drain covers faced different directions and the drains were not set the same distance from the patio cover, which made the downspouts and angles look mismatched. Multiple paver areas still have drainage problems, including new spots I identified later. Paver border around the turf was not set correctly. About 10 border pieces were loose and not attached to the concrete. Shower / border work The shower drain was not installed in the center. This is not a “design preference” issue. A drain is expected to be centered unless there is a clear reason and it is documented. It was simply installed off center, which is a workmanship issue. Artificial turf This was the worst part. Within weeks of install, I had grass and weeds coming through the middle of the turf in multiple spots (not at seams or edges). It eventually totaled 18 spots. The turf was uneven and lumpy, with dips and bumps that should never have passed final inspection. I was told this was because of gopher activity (we installed gopher wire and i have a full gopher fence around the entire yard) The infill was spread by hand, not with a spreader machine. The result was obvious: about 80% of the turf had little to no infill at all. When they came out to inspect it, I was told that infill on a 2 inch blade height turf was “optional” and that not having infill was not a big deal. That is not consistent with what other turf professionals have told me, and it clearly affected the feel, stability, and overall performance. Regarding the weeds, instead of addressing the underlying cause, the company would come out and remove them from time to time. To me, that felt like it was being done to minimize or hide the extent of what was happening rather than fix the install. When I said the turf needed to be completely redone the right way due to the improper install (lumps, dips, weeds coming through, lack of base prep), they sent me a “change order” for $45,000 to redo it “correctly.” In other words, I was being asked to pay a massive additional amount to get what should have been done properly the first time. I ended up hiring another company to redo the turf, and during removal they showed me recycled base had been used that was heavily contaminated with dirt, and the base depth ranged from about 0.5 inches to 2 inches depending on the area. There was also no weed fabric installed under the base. At a certain point, I lost confidence completely. The pattern was clear: corners were cut, quality control was missing, and the burden of catching mistakes fell on the homeowner. I expected a reputable company based on reviews, but my experience was the opposite. UPDATE: The fire pit installed by Installing Direct exploded into my girlfriend’s face. An independent inspection confirmed the gas connection was completely loose, causing gas to build up and ignite. Due to this gross negligence and the resulting injuries, we are currently in litigation.

Install-It-Direct is one of the most professional and proficient company I have worked with. They provided clear and concise proposal for services and worked with me throughout the process ensuring that I understood the services/products I purchased, next steps, and how to wrap up the project. The products and installation were stellar. Special thanks to Patrick and Dan for answering all my questions and addressing all my concerns. See the before and after....what a difference. I was looking for simple, clean, and low maintenance. Install It Direct understood the assignment.

Kristina Curtiss, a year ago

I had been evaluating multiple companies to install artificial grass in my front and side yards. I had been renovating my home/yard and was looking to make a great impression with the artificial grass and then I found Install-It-Direct. From my first conversation with Lidia Surdock, Construction Manager, I knew I found the company I wanted to work with. In a nutshell, their customer service, quality, and care for my project was exceptional in every way. A big shout out to Thomas Jackson, Sr. Design Consultant and project manager for my yard. He took the time to walk me through options, select the right artificial grass, and outline how the entire project will be executed. He was professional, knowledgeable, and provided exceptional customer service. I cannot express my thanks enough for an exceptional addition to my home.

What customers say:

We absolutely love our patio! Frank our project manager was great to work with and took really good care of us! Felix and all the guys who came everyday were all so nice and a pleasure to work with! We’ve gotten tons of compliments on our patio and 4k aluminum pergola! Its nice to know that we dont ever need to worry about maintenance. I would definitely recommend working with Modern Yardz!

Purita Sy-Quia, a month ago

My yard needed a total renovation, everything from end to end needed to be demolished and replaced with the exception of the pool. I received several recommendations but Modern Yardz had the earliest availability for a consultation. Frank came out to review my yard and my wish list of things...walls, pavers, turf, lighting, landscaping, pergolas. I had no idea where to start but Frank made me feel immediately at ease and guided me on some options. After that first meeting and walking through the virtual design, I decided I did not need to talk to another contractor and trusted that Frank and the Modern Yardz team could do the job. It ended up being a 3 month project with a few unplanned issues along the way, but we worked through them and Frank was always there to guide on the options and provided quick responses to all my questions. Sebastian the foreman and his team on the hardscape side were efficient and do quality work. They often made up project time when we had delays on other parts of the project. Everything was worth the wait. I went from having an old, run down backyard to a Modern Yard that I enjoy, morning to evening!

Honestly can't say enough good things about this company as we are SO THRILLED with the finished product. We hired them to demo and install all new pavers, grass turf and put in new drainage and the difference to our home's entrance way and side yard is truly night and day! I never thought I would be so excited about turf and cement until I saw what they could do. We received estimates from four different companies and felt Modern Yardz had the best solution and the most reasonable price point to fit our needs. Their communication before, during and after the job was top notch (huge shout out goes to our project manager, Russel, who answered all of our questions within minutes and kept us updated through the entire project). The owner of the company, Thomas, also checked-in multiple times to ensure the project was going as planned. The crew's workmanship and attention to detail was phenomenal. Overall just a really refreshing customer experience! We've worked with several other contractors throughout the past year after moving into our home and Modern Yardz has by far been our favorite company that we've worked with. We look forward to working with them again as we budget for future outside project. Thank you Modern Yardz team!

5. Drab to Fab

5.0 stars from 71 Google reviews.

What customers say:

Had Drab to Fab redo our front yard to a low/no water native plant landscape. They have been amazing! Fun to work with, flexible, and very friendly. They did some highly skilled and beautiful designs and their implementations and demo/installation was respectful of the rest of the property and very reasonable time wise. Highly recommended!

Nathan G, 6 months ago

Kurt and Alec are fabulous humans, who are amazing at what they do! They came over for a consultation, and we had a general idea of what we needed/wanted but really left it open to them for creative license! They had amazing ideas that they brought to life, and everything is thriving! Over time, we had about three plants that weren’t doing very well due to the heat, so they went and got new ones and replaced them once the heat wave was over. The new ones are now thriving! They worked quickly and efficiently and did the project in the time they said it would be completed (2 days!) They are extremely professional, creative, and responsive. They were always one text away before, during, and after, and are still checking in on us to see how things are doing. They now feel like great friends, and we plan to use them whenever we have landscaping needs! Thank you, Kurt and Alec!

Natalie Kuhn, 4 years ago

Drab to Fab did an excellent work on our front yard. What had been a rocky expanse of weeds is now a nice native plants garden! Their team was wonderful to work with every day and they were happy to answer my questions along the way so I learned quite a bit. Kurt and Alec are great! They worked with our landscape designer to get our project installed exactly how we wanted it. All of their suggestions worked out wonderfully. We're so grateful for their help!

Rock N Block did an excellent job transforming our backyard into a much more usable and beautiful space. From the start, the estimator offered expert suggestions and thoughtful ideas to help us achieve our goals while staying within budget. Pricing was competitive, and financing options were available. The entire process was organized and professional. Scheduling was proactive, communication was clear, and the timeline and cost estimate were accurate. The crew consistently arrived on time and worked hard every day. Our project manager was responsive, helpful, and easy to work with throughout the project. The on-site team was professional, respectful, and clearly took pride in their work. The finished paver installation looks fantastic and completely changed the feel and functionality of our backyard. We are very happy with the result and would absolutely recommend Rock N Block to anyone looking for quality hardscape work.

Nicole Walden, 3 months ago

They did a great job. I received three quotes and though theirs wasn’t the lowest, they were the so professional and collaborative. Andrew brought his iPad and was able to sketch the concept during the estimate and give me a quote right then. Materials were dropped off ahead of time and the workers did a fantastic job. The text invoicing and payment options were also very convenient. They were also very clear on what procedure and turf were best for a dog yard. I’m thrilled with the results. Oh; also, though my job was smaller than they usually do, Andrew combined it with another smaller job to give me a discount.

Susan Belknapp, 6 months ago

From start to finish Rock N Block and their team did an excellent job with our turf project. Very professional, cleaned up after every day and worked extremely hard to get our project done in a timely manner. Would highly recommend.

8. Del Mar Landscapes

5.0 stars from 54 Google reviews.

Del Mar Landscapes provides custom landscaping estimates based on project size, materials, and design scope. They handle both small upgrades and full backyard remodels, offering clear pricing after a site visit. Clients receive detailed information to match their budget and vision.

What customers say:

We hired Del Mar Landscapes for our backyard remodel and their crew did a fantastic job — we couldn't be more pleased with the results. The team handled everything: new concrete, a built-in fireplace, trees and plants, fresh grass, a planter box, fire bowl, low voltage lighting, and even built a screen to conceal our A/C unit. What was once a dull, uninspiring backyard now feels like a private resort. Friends and family have taken notice, and we're all spending so much more time outdoors because of it. A key goal of the project was achieving zone zero compliance, and the crew was knowledgeable and attentive in helping us meet those requirements. Pricing was reasonable, the work was top quality, and the team was considerate enough to clean up our driveway (where materials were staged) at the end of every day. Highly recommend!

SFastPB, 5 months ago

Doug's team did an amazing job removing a large obstructive and failing planter, putting in a firepit and a custom grill/burner with counter, and adding small planters; they were flexible and finished on time. The pricepoint was significantly unbeatable compared to 5 other bids. We also appreciated Doug's expertise in recommending a resurfacing company to repair and resurface the peeling concrete paint, making our entire yard come together for ideal backyard hosting. A year later, the work remains in excellent condition.

Esther Phuong Ho, 8 months ago

We had a wonderful experience with Doug, Ramon, Jason and team. They were very professional and timely. Always showed up on time and did wonderful work. Very fair and reasonably priced for all the work that was done. We can't say enough about how accommodating they were with all of the little surprises that popped up along the way. We had them redo landscaping in the front yard as well as add turf, cement pads and replace wood railing on our backyard deck with aluminum railing. They also were able to do lighting and sprinkler work. We couldn't be more pleased with the final product. They helped us accomplish our dream outside home remodel. So pleased to have gone with Del Mar Landscapes to get this job done. Would highly recommend using them for any jobs you have.

9. Infinite Sky Landscape Design

Infinite Sky Landscape Design offers trusted contractor referrals in San Diego, with light project oversight available during installation. Clients appreciate their creative and flexible approach to landscape redesign, aiming for results that go beyond standard designs. They are recommended for those seeking a personalized touch.

What customers say:

I’ve been wanting to upgrade my backyard for years and finally decided to just go for it. I looked up local landscape designers and discovered John’s yelp reviews. After reading them over, I decided to reach out to him and schedule a 1st meeting. When John came over, introductions were made and we showed him the yard with things we knew we wanted but also felt overwhelmed by the smaller details. John put us at ease with his expertise. He came prepared with previous projects before & after pictures and informed us of the process, assuming we of course selected him. We liked what he heard/saw. John also stated that he’d be willing to design our front yard if that was something we were interested in as both yards would be designed by the same person and have that cohesion. Our front yard was in need of an upgrade too. He made a point saying because we would have printed designs of the yard, we could do this project whenever we wanted. The process with John was smooth. He came to measure everything for his designs. Next were a couple digital plans he compiled based off of our wants along with potential plants he though would look nice (he travelled the neighborhood looking at what plants other yards had to help with his selections). We went over both printed designs. My wife and I discussed what we liked from each and let John know. John revised based off of our feedback and presented us with a final design that was a hybrid of the 2 previous plans. Our final meeting we went over the design. We were impressed by John’s detail, how the plants were neatly color coded with a key, the placement of everything, and things labeled to make it easy for contractors. John gave us about 5 printed copies to give to various contractors and also gave us a digital version. He then went over pricing of everything that erred on the higher side so we weren’t blindsided. He gave us various contractors he works with and informed us that if we were to use one of them, he would do check ins to see that everything was meeting his standards. All in all, we are very happy we spent money on John as a landscape designer. The yards look incredible! We’ve received many compliments on the yards. John really helped make an overwhelming task seem easy. Everything came together and are so thankful for John’s expertise and knowledge.

Kent Sargent, a year ago

We had the pleasure of connecting with John through our landscaper to develop a plan for our backyard. After our initial consultation, we made the decision to have John design our entire yard—front, back, sides, and even the parkway strip. Looking back, we're so glad we made this choice! The result is a comprehensive design that our landscaper could easily follow, and it’s a plan we’ll be able to enjoy for years to come. We chose to have John create full CAD designs for our yard because it allowed for the level of collaboration we were seeking in a landscape designer. John took the time to listen carefully to our needs, particularly our desire for low-water plants. He even introduced us to a new drought-tolerant grass variety, which was an excellent suggestion. John provided two initial design options, which we reviewed and ultimately combined, merging the best elements from both into one cohesive plan. We were particularly impressed with John's thoughtful attention to detail. He considered the optimal placement of plants, ensured our canyon view remained unobstructed, and prioritized low-water requirements. One of the aspects I most appreciate, now that the installation is complete, is how John subtly guided the viewer's eye through the space—something you don’t always notice consciously but can certainly feel. It’s a true testament to his professional expertise to design a plan that works beautifully in reality, not just on paper. John also pushed us to think outside the box, offering fresh ideas like designing our front lawn as a circular patch rather than a traditional square. This simple change added a unique touch to the overall design, creating a striking visual impact that feels both intentional and innovative. Throughout the entire process, John was consistently on schedule, communicative, and even available for questions during the installation phase. His dedication to the project and his clients was evident at every step. If you're considering having your yard landscaped, I highly recommend working with John to design your plan. His expertise, creativity, and professionalism will leave you with a stunning, functional outdoor space you’ll love for years to come. You won’t regret it!

Sean Davis, a year ago

5 stars — Truly collaborative, responsive design experience We worked with John and Infinite Sky Landscape Design and couldn’t be happier. John was incredibly easy to work with and responded quickly at every step. We’d previously tried a free design consult with another company that ignored what we wanted and delivered a generic, uninspired plan. In sharp contrast, John listened closely, incorporated our ideas, and made the process collaborative and efficient. His clear three‑step framework (Free Initial Consultation; 1) Measurement Day; 2) Brainstorm Meeting; 3) Final Design Review) set expectations and kept everything on track. We love the finished design and can’t wait to bring our dream backyard to life. Highly recommend!

We have continued using them to do seasonal maintenance and help us with new projects that emerge. They are very reliable and helpful with advice and unique challenges. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for design assistance, garden maintenance and planting. We are so happy with their service and attention to detail.

Leo and his crew handled our intense front yard re-do. We had difficult terrain, a mess of old irrigation pipes, and other challenges that seemed impossible. Leo listened to all our concerns and helped guide us with his considerable knowledge and creative vision. He was always friendly and quick to respond to any questions. The whole crew worked quickly and with care. Intu Nature Landscape works with Amie Meredith with Healing Gardens Landscape Design, and they both made an incredible redesign of the front of our house. We get so many compliments from neighbors, and we absolutely love everything they did. Not only was everyone great to work with, they are also kind and lovely people. HIGHLY recommend.

If you’re looking for a dependable landscaping company in San Diego, I highly recommend Intu Nature Landscape Associates. Great service and excellent results every time.

How do you choose a landscaper in San Diego?

Start by making a list of what you want: just a cleanup, a new patio, more shade, or a whole-yard overhaul. Ask if the company specializes in your kind of project, some focus on design, others on maintenance, and a few do it all. Always ask about experience with drought-tolerant plants and local soils; San Diego’s not forgiving if you guess wrong.

Check reviews, but also ask to see real examples of their work. A good landscaper will walk your yard, talk through ideas, and give you a detailed estimate. Don’t be afraid to ask about water use, warranty, or how they handle surprises. If you’re thinking about artificial turf, see if they can show you samples, not just photos.

Service Type Best For Typical Trade-Offs
Design-Build Firms Full yard makeovers Higher cost, longer timeline
Maintenance Only Pruning, mowing, cleanups Less design, no big changes
Turf Specialists Low-water, easy-care lawns Upfront cost, heat buildup
Tree Experts Health, safety, mature trees May not handle full yard
