10 Top Landscaping Companies in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Find the best landscaping companies in Pittsburgh for lawn care, design, hardscaping, and more

Homeowners in Pittsburgh should call a local landscaping company for everything from lawn care to retaining walls. Hiring a pro means you get someone who knows the local soil, the freeze-thaw cycles, and the best way to keep your yard looking good through a wet spring and a dry August. Most companies handle both design and maintenance.

Pittsburgh yards take a beating from steep slopes, heavy clay, and a freeze-thaw cycle that can split a patio or heave a walkway. A good landscape crew here knows how to build a retaining wall that lasts, set up drainage that actually works, and pick plants that survive a winter ice storm and a summer drought. If you have ever tried to dig a hole in local clay, you know why most people hire out the work.

Who are the best landscaping companies in Pittsburgh?

Ordered by Google rating weighted against the number of ratings, so a long record of good work outranks a handful of perfect scores. This is a ranking of public feedback, not an endorsement.

1. Local Roots Landscaping

4.8 stars from 284 Google reviews.

Local Roots Landscaping focuses on building a welcoming work environment for both experienced professionals and those new to landscaping. They emphasize training, education, and advancement opportunities while working to create some of the most attractive landscapes in Pittsburgh.

What customers say:

I worked with Local Roots to remove some concrete slabs, install a new fence, and install stone steps and native groundcover in my back yard. They were fantastic to work with from start to finish. Ron, Chad, and Owen from the team were extremely professional, worked fast and clean, and gave great recommendations and suggestions (and are just all around nice guys). I highly recommend Local Roots and would absolutely hire them again for future work.

matt barron, 3 months ago

This was our second job with Local Roots, and both projects ended up looking amazing! The installation crew (especially Jayson) went above and beyond to make sure we got what we wanted. They even managed to protect all of my existing plants in the work site. We had all of our grass removed, planting beds prepped, and a new concrete patio put in. We didn’t think this would be that lengthy of a job and considered doing it ourselves, but after seeing all of the work that went into achieving this, I’m so glad we ended up hiring Local Roots again.

Chrissy Riley, 2 months ago

Our experience with Local Roots was incredible. We absolutely love the finished product. Ricardo was great in planning our design. It was incredibly thoughtful and well planned out. He really listened to our ideas and truly delivered. Our installation team, Nick, John and Alejandro, showed up on time and finished the job within our time frame. They worked so hard and did an amazing job. Our experience from start to finish was amazing. Highly recommend them for your landscaping project!!

What customers say:

Updating my review: After multiple emails and a phone call with no response, I wrote the Google review. Within a couple hours of posting, Erik called me back. He argued that the work was complete since he put in a work order Saturday. After back-and-forth arguing, he came out to my property with a crew member. I showed him exactly what was unfinished and he had the crew member finish the incomplete work. After the conversation, he asked if I would delete my Google review and I told him I would update it. I will not delete my original review because it is true as to the interaction I had with Erik and the work that was done at my property. I will not hire this company again, and I will not recommend them to anyone. I hired this company to mulch multiple areas around my front and back yards. They came out on a Friday to edge the areas. Saturday morning they mulched but not did complete the work. I emailed Erik and never heard back. Later that evening, one guy came and mulched 2 spots. I emailed Erik again to let him know the work was not complete. My husband called and was told someone would call him back. It is now Tuesday with no response from Erik. No communication whatsoever regarding the incomplete work . Dream Greener had no issues charging my card on file though. The work is not completed. They charged me $950.00 for an incomplete job.

Dream Greener Lawn Service does an extremely professional and thorough job. I'm an older lady with a large lawn which I can no longer manage on my own but which I want to look good. Dream Greener is one stop shopping from shrubbery trimming, to fertilization, mulching, and lawn care. I was tired of piecemealing to different services. Dream Greener does it all. The price is not cheap but you get what you pay for.

Sheryl Schlendorf, 2 months ago

We have just started using Dream Greener has our lawn service. My husband felt no one could take care of our yard like he did. They have exceeded our expectations. They do a GREAT job and clean our driveway, patio, porch and all of our stairs. They leave everything looking great. We made a good decision on going with Dream Greener.

4.8 stars from 158 Google reviews.

What customers say:

Extremely impressed from start to finish! From getting the quote to project completion, Jordan, Mike and the crew were very prompt, professional and communicative. It can be hard to find trustworthy and responsive companies to work with, so I'm very grateful for such a positive experience with Steel City Landscape. Not to mention the quality of work - truly impeccable! I could not believe how meticulous the crew was to make sure everything was level and installed to perfection. Would highly recommend Steel City Landscape and I will continue to use them for any future projects.

Kristin Smith, 2 months ago

Steel City is a pleasure to do business with. Their hard working crews are very professional and respectful. They show up on time, and are talented and meticulous. Estaban's crew was here for a month installing a new patio and french drains. Their work is exceptional! And Ubaldi's mulching crew did a fantastic job cleaning up the yard and mulching the beds. Mike oversaw the crews every morning, and was on top of every detail. Jordan coordinated everything and kept everything on schedule and has excellent communication skills. I highly recommend working with Steel City Landscaping.

Cheryl Sarapa, a year ago

Worked with Mike to get a plan for doing a walkway, retaining wall and some work on a gravel driveway. Was a great process talking through our options with him and the price was extremely fair and communication was easy throughout. Esteban and his crew were here for a week and got everything done efficiently and beautifully. We couldn't be happier with the work done and the crew. Will absolutely use them in the future for any projects and recommend them to friends and family!

What customers say:

EDIT: One year later, I had a large tree fall over into another tree in my yard after a big storm. I of course called Titan. Charles and his crew did the dangerous work of making my yard safe again, and helped me work with my insurance company when the job ended up being bigger than we expected. If you're like me and you'd rather work with a person than with some franchise, call Charles. He is going to do the job right, and he's going to work with you when the unexpected happens. ___________________________________________ The before and after photos speak for themselves but I'm going to rave anyway: Charles and his team did an AMAZING job digging our house out of years of overgrowth after the previous owner wasn't able to maintain it. Paths that were unusable are now clear, trees that were choked with vines are now able to breathe, walls that were threatened by branches and roots are now safe. They got a frankly astounding amount of work done quickly, within the budget we had set, less than a week after I'd called him for an estimate. What more could a new homeowner ask for? Charles knew immediately what was beautiful or special, and what should be taken out; our yard is filled with unusual plants, so that's no small feat. He clearly knows his stuff backwards and forwards. He appears to be a small-business owner who is running the entire show by himself, so show this guy some patience, and he will apparently move mountains for you. Call him. Seriously, call him.

Becca Hayes, a year ago

EXCELLENT EXCELLENT and efficient service. I found them on Google because I had an immediate emergency! These guys saved my home! A huge tree fell on my house from a wind storm about 4am . I just can't say enough about how professional caring and efficient they are and were. I called at 8:15am after searching and calling other companies with no success. They called me back immediately after and came out the same morning I think about 9am and started working to cut the tree down and removed all the tree debri. Charles the owner was extra careful and oversaw the entire project. When he was finished he took it a step further and put a tarp over my roof to protect it as much as he could until I could get a roofer. I will certainly refer them and use them again for any tree removal or tree emergency removal service. They are the best and I'm totally appreciative of everything. Thank you Charles and your crew for everything. My experience with you was great and stress less!

Darlene Meadows, 3 years ago

We had a need to remove two large black cherry trees from our backyard, and reached out to Titan late on a Friday afternoon. By Saturday morning, Charles was on site quoting the job, and by the following Wednesday, the trees were safely cut down (by Charles) and the stumps were ground down perfectly and the site was cleared. I reached out to Titan based on Google reviews like these, and can honestly say that Charles & his team are worth the call and investment. They are very pleasant to work with, courteous, and cost effective. On this job alone, Titan's quote was 50-60% of the cost that other big name tree companies quoted the job, and the quality of work was excellent. We'd absolutely use them again! UPDATE: Like I said above, we'd absolutely use Titan again, and we did! We called Chuck to come look at a few trees and a heavy branch in our front yard that extended over our house. He came to look at them the next day, and within a week, the trees & heavy branches were gone, the stumps were ground, and the crew left the grounds with fresh soil, seed, and peat moss. It looks absolutely gorgeous! Can't recommend the Titan crew enough. My only regret is that I have nothing more for them to do at our property!

6. Bosetti Landscape Company

4.7 stars from 112 Google reviews.

Bosetti Landscape Company manages planting, hardscaping, shed pads, retaining walls, paver patios, excavation, and grading. They are recognized for their quality work, including transplanting mature plants and building durable retaining walls that expand usable yard space.

What customers say:

I am very pleased with the excellent landscaping services provided by Bosetti Landscape Company at my property. I sincerely appreciate the quality of the work and the attention to detail. Brad, Devin and the team did a great job removing overgrown ornamental grasses, reseeding, applying mulch and edging the lawn. The team was professional, responsive and delivered exactly as promised. Very trustworthy and reliable. I will definitely by a repeat customer. I highly recommend this company for you lawncare needs.

Barbara Schohn, 4 months ago

Brad and his company were recommended by another company and I was told "he's good people" that was a great complement and it held true. I called on short notice needing 4 ton of stone on site with a specific drop spot and they were able to accommodate my request. I then requested another 4 ton be dropped same day or first thing next day, my guys said they showed up same day which allowed my guys to make some much needed headway on our project. So if you need material his company can get it done, I had a great experience with Brad and his front office staff.

Mike Greene, a month ago

Highly recommend! Fantastic job done by Brad Bosetti and his team! We couldn’t be more pleased. Brad was quick to give us an estimate on our lawn make over. He gave us several options to choose from and helped us to make the right decision for our lifestyle. His team worked efficiently and had it completely done within a few days. He then gave us a watering schedule and even in the 100’ heatwave we started getting grass within a week. Two weeks later it’s beautiful! He even returned to repair a few bare spots. He doesn’t consider the job done until “he” is totally satisfied. We have future plans to do a brick patio and the Bosetti Company will be doing the job.

7. Jared Johnston Landscaping

5.0 stars from 71 Google reviews.

Jared Johnston Landscaping, also known as JJ Outdoor Living, uses specialized software to create lifelike renderings of outdoor projects. They incorporate personal touches into their designs, aiming for a smooth process and a finished space that matches the homeowner’s vision.

What customers say:

Jared and his crew were happy to take on a large and difficult hillside landscape job. Jared's design was excellent and needed very little adjustment, although he was very responsive to questions and feedback. The crew was polite, quiet, professional, and very good at what they do. The surrounding site was kept tidy during work and left in excellent condition at completion. Material/plant quality looks very good with healthy plants, nice looking boulders, and finely shredded mulch installed. Post-install support has been good as well. Jared and the crew will be back for more work in the near future. Update Sept 2024: More projects completed. We like Jared a lot and we enjoy having his crew at the house even more.

Adam Gibson, 2 years ago

When we bought our house, the landscaping was ok. There was a lot of black mulch and juniper bushes that eventually burnt out and left us with a weed filled dirt slope. We contacted Jared to see what we could do to not only have something that looked great but was manageable. Jared took the time to walk us through what he was thinking, gave us options along the way and valued our input. What he was able to do with our property was amazing. Additionally, Jared may be the most honest contractor that I have ever worked with. The price that he quoted us was the price at the end of the project. He originally gave us a start date when we first signed the contract and they showed up that day. When our project had to break for winter, we were told that we would be the first job once the weather broke in spring and they were there. He also takes immense pride in his work. We are now about a month past the end of the project. The contract is fully paid and Jared checks in and stops by to check on the plants to make sure they are healthy. He has found some that he is not happy with and is replacing them. Working with Jared has truly been a breath of fresh air. This was such an easy and rewarding process. He has earned a customer for life.

Patrick Garrett, 4 months ago

This is our first home in the suburbs with a larger yard after many years living in the city. We underestimated the amount and frequency of landscape maintenance needed and after six years it had gotten to the point where parts of the landscape were overrun. An example is large rock beds that over the years had accumulated dirt underneath and between the rocks and parts were overrun with weeds that we tried to deal with in various ways on our own but were unsuccessful. We met with several contractors to describe our ideas to turn rock and mulch beds into grass (that we could more easily maintain) and all the contractors said they could do it not a problem - except Jared. As Jared was walking around during the quoting process he was thinking through why the rock and mulch beds were there in the first place because they looked and felt intentional and suggested we get our exterior drain lines camera'd by a plumbing company. We did that and found out the previous owner had designed an entire underground drainage system to route water around the house and protect the finished basement he had built - and the rock and mulch beds were part of that. Jared then proceeded to put together a comprehensive plan to help meet our intentions, including to replace dying/diseased plants and trees and broken lighting we had throughout the landscaping (plus build a shed pad). He knows plants and trees inside and out, what is good for our region considering climate and deer, and designed something suitable/nice for our budget and ability to maintain (i.e. not very much). After some going back and forth we agreed on a proposal in the fall and they came back in spring to do the project. The crew was great, Jared was responsive to communication, and the end product turned out great, exceeding our expectations! His price was higher than others we quoted but the scope of project and more importantly to us the quality and service we received were also superior.

8. Leo's Landscaping LLC

4.8 stars from 84 Google reviews.

What customers say:

Much needed spring clean up and a lot of pruning & weeding beds and grading around outside french drains. They were on time, worked hard. When finished pleased with everything . Never before using other companies at the same or higher cost did the finished product look so good.

Jean Mcmahon, 3 months ago

Leo’s Landscaping came out for a mulch and weeding/cleanup project and exceeded our expectations. Communication was great from start to finish, and the crew went above and beyond by mulching and touching up additional areas that weren’t even part of the original quote - something you don’t see very often. Highly recommend and we’ll definitely be using them again!

Fritz Schwendler, 3 months ago

Joe and his team are just phenomenal. They offer incredible services for Snow Removal. I manage a small HOA in McCandless and it’s not easy to get a company willing to remove snow/ice for our community with our many walkways and narrow driveways. Joe and his team are excellent and salt, plow, and use calcium. Communications are always optimal and prices are fair. Thank you Joe. We hope to use you for landscaping projects as well this year.

9. South Hills Landscaping & Excavating, Inc.

5.0 stars from 62 Google reviews.

South Hills Landscaping & Excavating, Inc. provides waterproofing, landscape design and construction, light forestry, commercial maintenance, and snow removal. Their experienced crew focuses on quality workmanship, offering services from concrete and retaining walls to French drains and brush clearing.

What customers say:

We couldn’t be happier with the work Darren and his team at South Hills Landscaping & Excavating, Inc. did on our front porch. From start to finish, they were professional, knowledgeable, and clearly committed to doing the job the right way. They handled the full demo and rebuild of our concrete porch, and the difference is night and day. Darren took the time to explain the process, made sure everything was done properly (not just quickly), and paid close attention to the details that really matter for long-term durability. The crew was punctual, respectful of our property, and kept the work area clean throughout the project. It’s obvious they take pride in their craftsmanship, and it shows in the final result. If you’re looking for a team that values quality and integrity, we highly recommend Darren and his crew. Five stars all the way!

Michael Jennings, 4 months ago

We’ve done two projects with South Hills Landscaping and are continually impressed with how professional and friendly Darren and his team are. We’ve received compliments from other contractors on how well- done and uniform our concrete is. Our last project was very close to our neighbor’s property, but they were so impressed with how meticulous South Hills Landscaping was that they now want them to do their driveway and retaining walls!

Emily “Emily”, a month ago

We hired Darren and his team from south hills landscaping & excavating for a very large landscaping project. To summarize what we had requested was a new Cedar fence, remove and replace our rear patio and rear retaining walls, install drainage systems that were appropriate, remove and replace our front of house retaining walls walkways and driveways. Remove a huge tree stump. Run additional conduit for outdoor electrical to be installed by an electrician at a later date. Remove all old vegetation, which was substantial. We had multiple estimates and we decided to move forward with him and his team due to our early interactions with Darren. I found him to be direct and honest. I also was happy that he told me that when his team arrived on site that this would be their only focus and he would be personally there throughout the entire project and it was completed. Prior to beginning our project my wife had a serious injury that made mobility a big challenge and we debated delaying the project, but after discussing my concerns with Darren he assured me that everything would be alright. We began our project on the agreed upon start date and the total project was completed nearly a week earlier than we had anticipated. Wow! Darren and his team were awesome to work with. They assisted us when we needed creating a pathway to get a walker or knee scooter out of our house and performed the project in a sequence that would create as little impact to entering and leaving the property. The crew was super professional and friendly to me and my family. My child loved watching the activity and interacting with these friendly folks. The thing that I really appreciated was the team’s willingness to discuss different aspects of the project. In my eyes, it was very technical and wanted to know what was going on and if I had questions, these guys were more than happy to let me know, the how and why of what they were doing. The attention to detail was also incredible. Many small things really went the distance such as how the fence sloped from the 6 ft height to the 4 ft., How the wiring for the downlighting was concealed on the fence. At the end of everyday the site was cleaned of dust and debris and well Organized. Not a single day over the course of 3.5 weeks did these guys not show up, they worked through some pretty crumby weather that I would have thought for certain they would have called it quits, and I wouldn’t have blamed them. Additionally my project required a substantial amount of permits and inspections from the local municipality, I was very happy that Darren was able to effectively work with the local authorities to not only obtain the permits in a timely manner but also was well versed in what was required for each step of the project to pass the inspections. At the time of me writing this review, which is a month after the project has been completed, I have not found anything that has disappointed me. I’d hire these guys again without a doubt. I think that each member of the crew is a true professional, and I can honestly say that I’d consider them all a friend of my family. Well done!

10. Gardenalia LLC

4.8 stars from 53 Google reviews.

Gardenalia LLC is a team of landscape designers, gardeners, and artisans who create green, holistic, and sustainable outdoor spaces. They offer residential landscaping, gardening, meadow management, and both landscape architecture and design services in Pittsburgh.

What customers say:

We began working with Gardenalia last season. Patrizia’s design was spectacular! She really knows how to select beautiful, indigenous plants that complement each other — in colors, textures, and the rhythm of changes through the season. The Gardenalia team also does excellent, expert maintenance on the garden, and puts the same hard work into snow removal in winter. And no more bothering our neighbors with noisy lawn mowers or leaf blowers! We’ve asked Patrizia to expand her design vision into a new section this year and we’re looking forward to enjoying the whole garden as everything grows together over the years.

Christina Gabriel, a year ago

We are so lucky to have found Gardenalia and Pat! She offered a landscape-based solution for our 2-level yard that dramatically cut down on renovation costs, and it happens to be much more beautiful. The plants are interesting and varied. From the initial consultation, in the design process, and pre- and post-installation, she always listened and provided prompt answers to our questions and requests. The result is so beautiful and it’s been fun to watch our garden start to bloom! Highly recommend!!

Working with Gardenalia was a wonderful experience from the consult to the design to the final installation. Everyone complements the new landscape design & we love it.
