Top 10 Landscaping Companies in Des Moines, Iowa
Compare 10 Des Moines landscaping companies for lawn care, planting, patios, outdoor living, lighting and landscape design
September 30, 2026
By Diego Navarro

A Des Moines homeowner should compare these 10 landscaping companies based on the work needed, from lawn care and lighting to patios, planting and grading. Hiring one usually starts with a site visit, a written scope, drainage and soil discussion, and a clear schedule for work around Iowa’s changing seasons.
A Des Moines homeowner should compare these 10 landscaping companies by matching the company’s stated services to the actual work needed, whether that means lawn care, lighting, planting, grading or a patio. Hiring one involves a site review, a written scope, a price, and a plan for weather delays.
Des Moines yards deal with cold winters, hot humid summers, freeze-thaw movement and spring soil that can stay wet long after the snow is gone. Heavy clay is common, and compacted soil can leave turf thin, beds soggy and new plants struggling.
A good plan also accounts for snow storage, salt near walks, drainage away from the house and the fifth rainy week when the yard finally decides it has had enough. Iowa soil keeps receipts.
Who are the best landscaping companies in Des Moines?
Ordered by Google rating weighted against the number of ratings, so a long record of good work outranks a handful of perfect scores. This is a ranking of public feedback, not an endorsement.

I was cleaning the garage when A+ Lawn & Landscaped pulled up. Semaj introduced himself, let me know what he was going to apply to my yard and was extremely polite! There is a vacant lot next to mine that is not maintained. Semaj went out of his way and even sprayed a 6’-8’ section of the vacant lot adjacent to mine. He also sprayed about a 4’ section on both sides of the sidewalk on the vacant lot. I did not ask him to do this, I did not mention the eyesore or anything of that nature. He just went above and beyond to ensure our community looks great! Thank you Semaj!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had a fantastic experience with A+ Lawn Care! They were incredibly easy to work with and accommodated my schedule without any issues. They arrived on time, worked quickly and efficiently, and did an amazing job on my yard. I have a very large yard, and they made the entire process look effortless. What really stood out was the attention to detail—they even took the time to spot spray specific problem areas and tailor the service to my yard’s individual needs instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach. The lawn looks great, the service was professional, and the quality exceeded my expectations. I truly appreciate the extra care they put into the job. I highly recommend A+ Lawn Care to anyone looking for reliable, knowledgeable, and hardworking lawn care professionals!

I have been a customer of A+ Lawnscaping for the past four years and, until now, have always been pleased with their service. Unfortunately, my most recent experience has been incredibly disappointing—not just because of the mistake itself, but because I have tried to contact the company directly and have received no response. During my annual irrigation system test in mid-May, my irrigation system—which had been intentionally turned off—was apparently reprogrammed to run every day at 3:00 a.m. After the service, no one returned the system to the off state. I don’t normally use my irrigation system, so I had no reason to suspect anything was wrong until my water bills skyrocketed. My June bill increased by 105%, and my July bill was 156% higher than my May bill. After speaking with the water company and investigating myself, I discovered the irrigation controller had been watering my lawn daily for approximately 60 days. This oversight has cost me hundreds of dollars in unnecessary water charges. A technician should always leave a customer’s irrigation system in the same state it was found, especially when it has been intentionally turned off. Mistakes happen, and I understand that. What has been most frustrating is the complete lack of communication afterward. I reached out directly to A+ Lawnscaping to give them the opportunity to address the issue before posting a public review, but I have received no response. I hope the company takes this feedback seriously, improves its quality control, and responds to customers when problems arise.

We were very pleased with the landscaping services we received from Outdoors by JK. From the initial consultation and very reasonable cost estimate, through the installation process, project completion, and site cleanup we couldn’t be more satisfied. We now have a yard feature that is both functional and pleasing in design and one that has definitely enhanced our property. Again, thank you Outdoors by JK for a very positive experience!

Jack designed and built two new retaining walls for my lake house. Accessibility to the job site was very difficult due to the terrain. Jack proposed and delivered excellent wall designs. His team performed the job on time, on budget with excellent workmanship. Could not be happier with Outdoors by JK. I highly recommend them.

My wife wanted a cottage garden oasis for retirement. We contacted Ted Lare and they sent Jeff out. He was prompt, accessible, and listened to what she was thinking. The design he came back with was over the top amazing. It was a long summer with all the rain, but to see how happy she is sitting in her little slice of paradise with our two dogs this fall, makes it so worth it. Thanks so much Jeff.

Visiting the area with family and we stopped in to check it out on their grand opening for the garden center. Great options for plants and garden decor! Check them out for your gardening needs.

When my husband and I moved to Iowa from Florida, we were used to having beautifully landscaped yards—something our new home was missing. We considered doing the work ourselves, but we quickly realized we weren’t familiar with the local soil, plants, or climate. After visiting several garden shops, we found Ted Lare, and we were thoroughly impressed from the start. They sent a specialist to our home to understand our vision, and the detailed plans and options she presented were exceptionally helpful. From there, we worked together to create exactly what we wanted—and all within our budget. When landscaping day arrived, we were amazed. The team’s expertise, work ethic, and equipment completely transformed our front yard, giving us the curb appeal we had hoped for. They truly exceeded our expectations! A few months later, we decided to add some fall colors to our landscape—something we had never experienced in Florida. Our wonderful specialist, Amber, returned and designed a custom plan that brought stunning autumn beauty to our yard. The results were absolutely incredible! I can’t say enough great things about Ted Lare. They are knowledgeable, professional, reliable, and reasonably priced for the outstanding quality they provide. We’ve already scheduled a spring maintenance visit and look forward to working with them again. If you’re looking for expert landscaping and a team that genuinely cares, we wholeheartedly give Ted Lare Design + Build our highest recommendation!

What customers say:
The guys that work here must be incompetent, they are incapable of reading street signs and are rude and inconsiderate. Parking in the middle of a street right next to a no parking sign is extremely rude and blocking the entrance/exit of a cul-de-sac is a poor look for a company. Upon informing the guy that he shouldn't be parked there and that he was blocking the street, he said it was "okay because his guy was at the gas station" unfortunately that doesn't make it any more okay and this behavior should be frowned upon. I added a photo so everyone can see how they disregarded not only the no parking sign they had to pass to get to the house but also the one that they parked looking right at.

Isaac takes care of our neighbors lawn. We were having a garage sale next door. He was super kind and made sure to blow all the clippings away from all our merchandise. What a great way to promote quality business and gain support for your company. Thanks again Issac!!!

I can't believe this company takes my boyfriend's mother's money for the crap job they do on her lawn. So far they have been out three or four times this year and have yet to trim these areas of the lawn against the house. No matter how many times we have asked last year for them to do those areas. Pathetic!

Luke and his team were amazing! We originally brought him on for a design idea and then wanted everything he proposed so hired him to do it all! They worked hard but quickly and made a huge impact on our yard around the entire house. He brought in a lot of variety that would be simple upkeep for me, and it looks fantastic.
Dustin & April Beauford, 5 months ago
I wanted to have some major landscaping work done on my 1952 ranch to fit the mid-century vibe so I contacted several local landscapers. Only Pilot Landscape responded and Luke came to my house shortly thereafter. I shared my ideas and he took them and created a perfect plan! The hardscape matches the chimney and rock planter wall that was already there. I plan to use Luke for future work and highly recommend him and his team!
Jennifer Rehder, 7 months ago
Luke was great to work with on our landscaping projects. He provided great design insight in creating our whole yard landscaping plan and was extremely careful and professional during the installation of plantings and hardscapes. He’s been back multiple times to check on his plantings, replacing those that didn’t make it through the winter. We hired him again this spring to create some pollinator beds and a visually appealing home for our beehive. Although this was a much smaller project, he completed it with the same care and professionalism. I highly recommend him for your landscaping design and projects, large or small!

This past year I had Stone Cross sod my yard, due to whatever circumstance the sod died off. Stone cross then went above and beyond to remove all the dead sod and reseeded it at their own cost to ensure I was satisfied. I am very happy with how the spring overseed turned out and I would highly recommend Stone Cross for your next landscaping job.

We are extremely happy with our new patio. Stone cross has been wonderful to work with. Jeremy is so great and extremely knowledgeable giving us a bit of guidance. The crew was cheerful, polite, and conscientious of our property. Foreman - James was very informative and cheerful all the time and went out of his way to make sure everything was just right. It was refreshing to hear chatter and laughter while working so hard. We had a fabulous experience and result at a very reasonable price. Thank you to the whole crew!!!

Brad and his crew have always been fabulous to work with! The 3D rendering during the planning process sold us. The project soon became the beautiful outdoor space we envisioned for relaxing and entertaining. Stone Cross's talented employees installed a patio, gas firepit, landscape edging, plants and all outdoor lighting, as well as poured a large stamped concrete pad for our hot tub. We also use their lawn care services for a top-notch look every Summer.

We’ve used Nate and his team for a number of projects, 3 of my neighbors also hired them as a result with great outcomes. We’ve purchased close to 20 trees with only 1 not surviving. They replaced the tree the following season that didn’t survive. Great designers and good inventory and pricing. Thanks Lounsbury

Apparently they're only interested in big projects. The lady looked down her nose as I was describing what I wanted. All she said is we’re booked 3 months out for estimates, turned her back on me, and proceeded with her day. No asking if I'd still like to book or anything, so I just walked out with my $7-10000 budget.

How do you choose a landscaper in Des Moines?
Start by naming the job in plain terms. A mowing plan is not the same purchase as a retaining wall, and a patio project needs different experience from a planting refresh. Ask whether the company handles design, installation, maintenance or only a specific part of the work.
Have the landscaper walk the property before work begins. Look for low spots, downspouts that empty beside the foundation, compacted clay, tree roots and places where snow or road salt collects. Ask what happens if the soil is too wet to grade and how the schedule changes during rain or an early freeze.
Request a written scope that identifies materials, bed preparation, drainage work, plant sizes, cleanup, maintenance and payment stages. For hardscaping, confirm the base depth and how the company plans to manage movement from frost and wet clay. A pretty sketch does not hold a patio in place.
| Project need | Questions to ask | Details to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn care | What visits and treatments are included? | Mowing height, trimming, cleanup, weed control and seasonal timing |
| Planting or bed renovation | How will the soil be prepared? | Compost or soil amendments, drainage, plant sizes and watering plan |
| Patio or walkway | What base and drainage system will be used? | Excavation depth, aggregate base, edge restraint, slope and joint treatment |
| Retaining wall or grading | Where will water go after construction? | Wall drainage, backfill, runoff path and protection of nearby structures |
| Landscape lighting | What fixtures and controls are included? | LED fixture type, transformer location, cable protection and timer setup |
Before signing, check that the proposal names who handles permits, utility locating, plant replacement, irrigation adjustments and final cleanup. Ask for references or photos of similar work, especially if the job includes a wall, drainage correction or large paved area. The cheapest bid can become the expensive one after the first freeze.
Frequently asked questions
How much does landscaping cost in Des Moines?
The price depends on the work. Mowing and seasonal cleanup are usually recurring services, while patios, retaining walls, grading and drainage require site measurements, excavation and material choices. Ask for a written estimate that separates labor, materials, soil work and cleanup.
What should I ask a Des Moines landscaper before hiring?
Ask whether the company has handled the type of project you need, how it prepares heavy or compacted soil, where water will drain, what materials are included and how weather affects the schedule. Get the scope, price, payment stages and cleanup terms in writing.
When is the best time to plant landscaping in Des Moines?
Spring and fall are generally the most comfortable planting seasons in Des Moines, but timing depends on the plant and soil conditions. A landscaper should avoid working wet clay, protect new plants from drying winds and provide a watering plan before summer heat arrives.
Do Des Moines landscaping projects need drainage work?
Not every project does, but drainage should be checked before installing beds, patios or retaining walls. Heavy clay, compacted soil, downspouts and frozen ground can all move water where it does not belong. The finished plan should show where runoff will go.

Build for the wet spring, the hard freeze and the July heat, and the yard will have a fair shot.
