Top 10 Landscaping Companies in Chesapeake, Virginia
Compare 10 Chesapeake landscaping companies for lawn care, tree work, cleanups, patios, and full-service landscape projects
September 20, 2026
By Valeria Navarro

Chesapeake homeowners can choose from lawn care providers, tree specialists, cleanup crews, patio contractors, and full-service landscapers. Hiring one usually starts with a property review, followed by a written scope, schedule, and maintenance plan. Ask about drainage, grass type, storm risks, soil conditions, cleanup, and who handles permits when needed.
Chesapeake homeowners should call a landscaper that understands humid summers, wet storms, coastal winds, and the city’s mix of sandy Coastal Plain soil and heavier, compacted ground. The right fit depends on the job: lawn treatments, tree safety, routine mowing, drainage, planting, or a full outdoor build.
Grass can struggle here for opposite reasons. Rain may leave low spots soggy, while summer heat turns exposed soil dry and hard. Tall fescue needs a different rhythm than bermudagrass or zoysiagrass, and salt, shade, deer, mosquitoes, and storm debris can complicate an otherwise simple yard.
A good contractor should look at the property before promising a perfect lawn. Ask how the plan changes for poor drainage, tree roots, compacted soil, spring weeds, and the hurricanes or heavy thunderstorms that Chesapeake homeowners know too well.
Who are the best landscaping companies in Chesapeake?
Ordered by Google rating weighted against the number of ratings, so a long record of good work outranks a handful of perfect scores. This is a ranking of public feedback, not an endorsement.

Tim Atkinson was our service tech for about 2 years. He did an excellent job, was very willing to discuss any problems with the yard, including too much shade. I'm spent over $4K cutting down trees in my yard based on his recommendations. The additional sunlight has been helpful for the grass. Our current tech is Perry. I would like to give him a good recommendation as well. The post treatment emails point to an electronic review site. Unfortunately I do not do that, as I am fearful that it will result in unwanted junk mail from whomever else subscribes to the same review service. So I prefer to give my recommendation directly to ALM.

My lawn looks like it was raised in a stable, two-parent household with a trust fund and a direct line to the Creator. It doesn’t just grow; it flourishes with the moral superiority of a honor roll student. All hail Joseph of ALM, the Patron Saint of Turf

I keep finding candy/snack/chip wrappers and cans in our yard and I finally figured out it was this company. I noticed that they had dropped a can next to their trailer on my way out and lo and behold, it was on our curb as soon as I got home. It was completely intact so either it somehow rolled 30 ft across and 15 feet uphill (the can is directly in between the 2 main drains on this street) or these idiots decided to dump it here so they don’t leave trash in their clients’ yards. Find a better company for your lawn needs if you don’t want to annoy your neighbors.

I had them cut down two trees in my backyard that were dying. They were very efficient and affordable. The team was nice and cleaned up everything, despite the challenges my yard posed (not allowing for trucks to go all the way to the back where the trees were located) they were still able to get the job done. They were even able to come sooner than our original scheduled appointment. I dont have very good before and after pictures but my dogs and I enjoyed looking at the cool machines in the backyard haha. I would definitely recommend them for all your tree needs. Thank you again!

5/5 Stars – Outstanding Service and Extra Effort! I highly recommend 757 Tree Solutions for anyone needing tree services. I recently needed vines removed from a tree in my front yard, so I met with three different companies for quotes and ultimately chose them. The representative arrived exactly on time for the quote, providing highly professional service and a very reasonable price. On the day of the job, the crew arrived and did exactly what I paid for—plus a little extra that I didn’t even expect. The day before their arrival, I had cut several limbs from a different tree and left them on the curb for city pickup. Without even being asked, the crew took care of those branches and hauled them away for me. They truly went above and beyond, and I would absolutely use them again.

Ummm ok 757 Tree Solutions, I see you! First time homeowner, busy mom, zero tree knowledge. Somehow I thought my gorgeous maple tree just needed love and vibes to stay healthy. It does not. It started with the most amazing free estimate and everyone was just so kind from the very beginning. Everyone showed up in full protective gear, worked together like a really tight crew, got everything done so fast, and cleaned up every single branch and piece of debris before they left. They even put down the most beautiful mulch circle around the base of the tree which I did not know was even a thing. Oh and two of the guys jumped up and hung from our little one's swing themselves just to make absolutely sure it was safe. It’s the little things! Can’t recommend them enough!

This is a great lawn service. They provide full year coverage for things like leaves and gumball removal in the fall. Their office is good about giving you a heads up about when they will be there, and they are very responsive to special requests (like focus on the back deck because we have a party, etc). We have moved on from Chesapeake but I would definitely hire them again if we come back.

Just had our first lawn service by Freedom Mowers and they most certainly didn’t disappoint. Very thorough mowing and precise in the trimming. The clean up of leaves and clippings was great. We highly recommend their services.

What customers say:
Rob has been mowing and trimming our lawn for just about a year and I have never had a lawn that looked so good. On top of doing an awesome job, he is very responsive whenever I have a question or request. Recently, we asked Rob to clean out the old mulch in all of our landscaped areas, top dress with compost/topsoil mix, put down new mulch, and install some river rock in areas were we have a lot of drainage during heavy rains. Rob's work looks excellent and his price was good. He even worked through the rain to be able to squeeze the job in before we hosted our son's birthday party at the house. The combination of great work, a good price, reliability, and excellent customer service is so rare these days, but Rob does it all. I'm glad that we got connected with him and would definitely recommend Good N' Green!

Absolutely fantastic service! David offer to come by and check out my lawn the day after I called him. Came by and said the tree that I needed would be removed by the next morning. The service was extremely quick, concise, and very professional :)
Darion Carr, 2 months ago
David came out to take a look at our flower beds and severely neglected crape myrtle tree. He was very knowledgeable, professional, and very personable. He made recommendations and explained how and why he would do that. David and his crew were out the following morning to do the work. My wife and I had to both work. When we got home the work awesome. Everything looked great and most important my wife was thrilled. They even pruned back the rose bushes and made recommendations for the beetles that were eating the leaves. We will definitely be using them for any future landscaping or yard projects. Posting before and after pictures
Frankie Triveri, 5 years ago
I can’t say enough great things about Affordable Cuts! I sent an inquiry on a Saturday evening, and within the hour, David responded and offered to stop by the very next morning for a quote. He was professional, thorough, and took the time—about 30–45 minutes—to clearly explain all my options. His quote was more than fair, and just two days later, he and his crew came out and completed the job in only a couple of hours. The results were fantastic, and I’ll definitely be reaching out to them again for future projects.

Sunscape Land Works completed an extensive back yard renovation for us following a new in ground pool install and we could not be more pleased! The initial process was thorough and included drawing, plans, and revisions based on feedback and preferences. The plans were artistic and creative. The project was completed in phases, to include poured concrete, pavers, sod installation, flower beds, stones and large rocks and plantings. At each step we were able to discuss our preferences and come up with solutions that were both beautiful and practical. The owner was frequently on site and was accessible by telephone on occasions that he was not present. The owner and crew leader were professional, approachable, friendly and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend the services of Sunscape Landworks!

The concrete shed pad and access pathway look incredible. SLW did an outstanding job rebuilding my sloped backyard in order for my shed to be built. The professionalism was top notch and the entire project was completed without any problems.

The entrance at New Creation United Methodist Church appearance is beautifully enhance by the "Prayer Garden" from the patio, walkways, and landscaping. In addition the drainage will improve the safety of folks entering the main entrance in inclement weather. The two gentleman from New Creation who worked most closely with all the employees of Visionscapes praises each employee for his diligent work and seeing when a helping hand might be needed and jumped right to it without being asked [ i.e. a heavy bench might need to be moved which was not an item provided by Visionscapes.] It is obviously the company is good to their employees and therefore the employees work hard and are proud of their work, Rightly So. The interaction between the owner's son and the employees was a delight to see.

What customers say:
“PRETTY” BUT SHODDY & SLOPPY We had Newell Landscaping come out to service our front & back yard for our first time as homeowners May 2025 — this fact was argued, but I’ll get to that. They arrived with a crew of 6 and quickly got to work. We had paid another company to do full tree & seasonal trimming the week before so I was a bit alarmed to hear MULTIPLE weed whackers, but I decided to keep the faith. 3 hours later, our landscaping was “done” but not AT ALL to the standard we expected or were promised. My hydrangeas were HACKED (so yea, they won’t bloom this year — thanks a lot), the weeds in the flowerbeds were not sprayed or pulled — just simply covered up with mulch, in a most annoyingly sloppy way. Upon further inspection, I saw MANY desecrated leaves, twigs, branches & damage to 2 corners of our siding on our house from the use of said weed whackers. My husband, who is much nicer than me, reached out to the owner who loves to print on his invoices “please reach out to us! we want to know our job is to your satisfaction!” — yea right. This man argued back & forth MULTIPLE times about the “quality” of the work, he refused to take accountability for any damage done to our home, & he even went as far as to feel shock at our displeasure because he said he has serviced our home “for many years” …..newsflash, we moved into this home in 2019. we had never complained because we had NEVER used him. & now won’t ever again. WEIRD. Sure, after much argument someone finally came back out to spray the bright green weeds that were poking & growing thru the newly laid mulch, but at this point, I’m already so disheartened by the whole process & how we were treated — so I can’t wait to do their job YET AGAIN and now pull weeds, which we had already paid them over $1K to do in the first place. Next year, I’ll save my money & hire literally anyone else.
Megan Layne Deane, a year ago
Newell left a large amount of mulch in the road during my neighbor’s yard service, then blew it into both my yard and my neighbor’s instead of cleaning it up. When I called, I was told someone would return to blow it back into the street and rake it up. That never happened. The person who came back simply blew the mulch even farther into the grass. No raking, no collecting, no actual cleanup. There are no mulch beds anywhere near where this material ended up. It was dropped in the road and scattered into yards that were not part of the job. I should not have to walk through my own lawn and step on mulch, splinters, and debris from a service I did not hire. I ultimately had to take out my own rake and clean up their mess myself, filling half of a 5‑gallon bucket with mulch that never should have been in my yard. Mistakes happen. Dropping mulch in the road is an easy fix. The issue here is that their idea of "cleanup" was making the mess someone else’s problem, even after management was notified.
Chris Dietz, 3 months ago
Working with Newell’s was a great experience. Ryan and his crew made sure we were on the same page all along the way. Ryan kept us within our budget with a landscaping idea that was above our expectations. All along the way there was clear communication. On the day the work was done, it all started with a walk around with Ryan and his crew chief and us to make sure the work to be done was clear. Throughout the day there was checking in by the crew chief to make sure all was well. It was a very pleasant experience and we will be contacting them for maintenance.

How do you choose a landscaper in Chesapeake?
Start with the problem, not the company label. A lawn treatment provider may be the right choice for soil testing and weed control, while a tree specialist is better suited to a leaning or storm-damaged tree. Patio and landscape construction requires a clearer design scope, material plan, drainage review, and timeline.
Ask each landscaper to walk the property and explain what they see. Chesapeake yards can change from one block to the next, so a generic package may miss standing water, thin topsoil, shade from mature trees, or grass that is simply planted in the wrong light. Get the recommendations and price in writing.
| Project need | Questions to ask | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn care | What grass and soil conditions are present? | Treatment schedule, weed control, fertilization, and watering expectations |
| Tree work | Is removal necessary, or could trimming reduce the risk? | Tree assessment, nearby targets, cleanup, and storm-related concerns |
| Routine maintenance | What does each visit include? | Mowing, edging, leaf removal, bed care, and seasonal changes |
| Cleanup | What will be removed and hauled away? | Property boundaries, debris disposal, and completion standards |
| Patios or landscape construction | How will the design handle drainage? | Materials, grading, permits if needed, timeline, and change orders |
Do not skip the practical questions. Confirm who supplies plants and materials, how weather delays are handled, whether recurring service renews automatically, and what happens if a plant dies. A low quote can become expensive if it leaves drainage, grading, or cleanup out of the scope. Chesapeake gets enough rain to make that lesson the hard way.
Frequently asked questions
How much does landscaping cost in Chesapeake, Virginia?
The price depends on the work. Mowing and seasonal maintenance are usually priced differently from tree removal, drainage work, patios, planting, or a full landscape installation. Ask for a written scope that separates labor, materials, hauling, recurring visits, and possible changes.
What grass grows best in Chesapeake, Virginia?
Tall fescue is commonly used for a cool-season lawn, while bermudagrass and zoysiagrass can suit sunny yards that tolerate summer heat. Shade, drainage, soil compaction, and irrigation matter as much as the grass choice, so have the site reviewed before reseeding or installing sod.
Do I need a landscaper to fix standing water in my yard?
A landscaper can assess grading, compacted soil, downspouts, and low areas, then suggest options such as regrading, drainage improvements, rain gardens, or better planting. Persistent water may also require a drainage contractor or other specialist, depending on its source.
When should I schedule lawn care and tree work in Chesapeake?
Lawn care is usually planned around the grass type and growing season, with spring and fall often bringing important maintenance windows. Tree work should be scheduled before a risky tree becomes an emergency, especially after storms, visible damage, or signs of leaning and root problems.
